Phonics

Phonics in Early Years and Key Stage 1

At St John with St Augustine's Primary School we teach phonics daily in EYFS and Key Stage 1.

We follow the Letters and Sounds Phonics Scheme.

Phonics Intent Statement

The teaching of phonics is of high priority in our school. Through a coherently planned and sequenced phonics curriculum, children are taught to segment words to support the blending of sounds to read words and in spelling. We believe that phonics provides the foundations of learning to make the development into fluent reading and writing easier, supporting all children in their future learning and employment. We are passionate about ensuring all children become enthusiastic, ambitious and confident readers and writers.
