English Intent Statement

At St John with St Augustine Primary School, English and the teaching of English is the foundation of our curriculum. Our coherently planned and sequenced curriculum closely follows the aims of the National Curriculum for English 2014. The National Curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

● read easily, fluently and with good understanding

● develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information

● acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language

● appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage

● write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences

● use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas

● are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

Our intent is to ensure that every single child progresses in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening and becomes a primary literate and ambitious pupil. Through our English curriculum, we strive to teach the children how vital their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills will be in the real world. By giving this context to their learning, the children understand the value of English to them now, and in their future learning and employment. We offer a range of opportunities and experiences to our children, to give all learners the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. At St John with St Augustine Primary School, our vision is for creativity to be at the helm of our English curriculum and for children to learn new skills in a fun and engaging way, using a range of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic teaching strategies. We believe that a secure basis in English knowledge and skills is crucial to a high quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society.
Our English curriculum is reviewed yearly and emphasis is placed on the needs of our children. This year will see a great focus on developing children’s vocabulary through English, Maths, Science and other curriculum lessons. Children will be encouraged to ask and answer questions and participate in a wealth of debate and discussion. We want to inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening and to use discussion to communicate and further their learning.  Our English policy, which can be found on our website, reflects our vision and supports the implementation of the curriculum. The English curriculum in EYFS lays strong foundations for the National Curriculum aims.
